Cancer is an important challenge for which personalized molecular medicine shows great promise. Recent advances in immunotherapy and genetic testing have been proposed to help transform care from one-size-fits-all to a highly specialized range of options that could be adapted to fit an individual’s molecular features. However, we are still far from understanding and navigating cancer. In fact, many promising research projects that reveal new targets and promising strategies that work on animal models fail in clinical trials. While generating data has been increasingly accessible, the challenge is now in integration and extracting insights from this data. A multi-omics approach based on big data analyses could lead to substantial advances in cancer treatment.

Agrotechnology

To defend against the threats posed by climate change, pathogens, and insects, bioinformatic analysis can be used in the field of agrotechnology to identify and enhance the natural defenses and adaptation of plants to changing conditions. As the agriculture industry moves into a “data-centric” era, the information we glean will help farmers meet the growing needs of an expanding global population. The demand on agriculture is expected to increase by 70% in the next ten years, making an increase in productivity absolutely vital. Biotechnology, with a focus on “omics”, can help farmers to increase their productivity.

To encourage more students and researchers to make use of the potential and power afforded by big biomedical data, the Pine Biotech team designed a series of lessons that focus on cancer, with practical, hands-on projects that allow students to practice analyses with data adapted from real datasets. The course will cover some of the important aspects of agriculture:

  • Differences between eukaryote, prokaryotic and non-model organism’s genome differences
  • Understand how Arabiopsis is a useful model for understanding the cellular and genetic components of plant biology
  • The importance of environmental pressure and it’s effect on metabolic processes in plant biology
  • How expressed isoforms can regulate chemical contents released into the environment
  • How big data is being utilized to improve production and regulate plant metabolism
