I have been a bioinformatics student throughout my academic career as I majored in bioinformatics for my undergraduate and graduate studies. Later I did my Ph.D. in computational chemistry and biology where I extensively used numerous bioinformatics tools to analyze data, implemented machine learning algorithms to develop predictive applications and performed a lot of structural modelling based long range simulation that generates a large volume of data to answer different biological questions. After finishing my Ph.D., I joined a company that provided bioinformatics services to the healthcare industry by collaborating with biotech and pharmaceutical companies working towards drug development. What I thought about the course:
The Introduction to Bioinformatics course is one of the first courses I completed at the T-BioInfo educational platform. This content of the course is very nicely expressed and explained by the author. Overall this bioinformatics course is strictly not for skill development but awareness of the possible areas of high throughput / big data research and the introduction to the t-bioinfo platform. I would highly recommend this course because an in-depth awareness of the capabilities of big data in biology is mostly missing in any other online and offline courses (available in India) which this course provides. With my limited experience in research in industry and academia, I benefited a lot by going through this course.
What did I learn about the bioinformatics course:
The Introduction to Bioinformatics course is centered towards the growth in healthcare & biomedical data and the existence and growth of the techniques following a timeline. The course that starts with the basics to develop an understanding of how biomedical data is generated through research lab experiments. Coincidently, based on my understanding; the realization of finding answers by mining and analyzing big data came into existence in the past few years. As the number of opportunities in terms of research & industrial career has grown in accordance with the need. This course is centered towards the current need and requirements, where the focus is shown towards the data-driven discovery. The course also tells about the application of bioinformatics in various domains. Having experience in other domains of bioinformatics the course gave me vision and understanding of big data analysis in personalized and precision medicine where the future of healthcare and medicine is heading. The intuitive platform with relevant videos (YouTube) and concise text kept me interested in learning and completing the course. I rate high for the choice of the videos and the simplistic ways used in the tutorials.
