Bioinformatics skills are required for anyone seeking to participate in advanced life science research projects and are (or want to be) involved in biomedical research. A big challenge for those interested to get into bioinformatics is to get started and gain enough momentum quickly. Once you start getting involved and feel comfortable using basic tools, you can easily continue the journey navigating the complex and dynamic world of bioinformatics. That is the objective of the Omics Logic training programs, internships, and big data analysis tools we offer.
OmicsLogic programs offer focused insight into bioinformatics analysis by demonstrating how processing, analysis, and integration are used for various projects. We explain each dataset, explain how to prepare it for analysis, and review analytical approaches by comparing and contrasting various types of bioinformatics pipelines. Then, we discuss outputs. We explain the significance of various settings and see how they impact the results. These projects are selected from high impact publications where leading researchers investigate critical challenges in oncology, neuroscience, agrotech, biotech, and virology.
Acquiring bioinformatics skills is of tremendous value. But you probably know that online course certificates are not yet valued that much. One of the reasons for this is due to the lack of community, oversight, and mentorship. How many times have you tried learning in a Coursera or EdX course and found yourself simply falling asleep watching a video? Even with practical coding courses, the challenge of learning about arrays and importing files is that you don’t get to apply the learned skills to a project you are seeking to conduct. And even more frustrating is when you can’t get clear guidance on overcoming a problem you encounter and spend hours troubleshooting simple technical issues.
These challenges of online education slow down your progress, taking away motivation and momentum that will carry you to an independent project. That’s why Omicslogic training can be a way to get there faster. We eliminate the technical challenges early on. Datasets and projects are curated, focusing you on the important topics you must learn. We offer supported infrastructure and activity tracking so any issues can be addressed early on. Our growing mentor network allows you to get feedback for your project ideas and ask for suggestions. Ultimately, you acquire the logic of bioinformatics approaches to deal with many types of commonly used -omics data to investigate cutting edge research questions in life sciences.
What skills will you gain from participating in OmicsLogic Training?
1. Develop computational “critical thinking”
You will learn how to address challenges and solve problems using omics data. We will teach you how to find the right data and anticipate correct outcomes. You will learn to read through research articles, perform literature review and identify interesting questions you can focus on using appropriate data and effective analysis methods.
- Matching the right dataset with the right analysis
- Knowing how to focus and refine your research question
- Evaluating research others have done by understanding methods they used and knowing other methods that are similar but offer a different perspective
2. Understand the logic of analysis and data transformation
Bioinformatics analysis is performed in stages. You have to understand the data, prepare it, oftentimes structure it and convert to a correct format for downstream annotation. Many options at every stage are linked to the logic of what you are trying to do. You will learn to think through an analysis using such logic and map your question to a technical process, or a “bioinformatics protocol” that you can execute upon.
- Plan and understand analysis pipelines
- Get familiar with analysis method inputs and outputs
- Learn about the meaning of statistical concepts and values
3. Become Familiar with commonly used bioinformatics tools and methods
Bioinformatics is a dynamic field. Many tools are being used for similar tasks and new methods are always being developed. These include variations of the same algorithms that underpin the analysis methods. By knowing key tools and understanding conceptually what they do, you will be able to navigate other methods and understand why or why not to use them in your analysis.
- Learn about data processing tools to prepare, clean and structure data
- Select tools for statistical analysis and hypothesis testing
- Apply algorithmic methods of big data analysis and integration, including machine learning and network analysis
4. Gain Experience Through a Bioinformatics project
Most importantly, you will gain real experience. Troubleshooting, starting over, fixing issues – this is not a lack of a course, it is the objective. Only by going through these stages and having a person who is more experienced guide you in this process will lead to real outcomes. OmicsLogic sessions with mentors and guides as well as a dynamic community of like-minded people will help you
- Experience common challenges and issues bioinformaticians address by preparing pipelines
- Identify and address assumptions in analytical methods and perform validation
- Incorporate reproducible analysis best practices and standards
Analysis of data can be a long process with many steps and outputs along the way. To explain how the analysis was performed and explain the final outputs, you will learn to use the right visualization tools and prepare compelling graphics.
- Learn to explain the analysis you performed and why it was selected
- Learn to summarize the results by including both analytical and visual representations
- Utilize effective reporting and interactive outputs for clarity and in-depth analysis communication.
