Data Science is a desired profession that brings together diverse skills of handling data and turning it into useful information. Some of the highest paying and interesting jobs in the US are for data scientists at high tech companies like Apple, Google, and Uber. Data scientists are solving business problems, developing new products, and finding answers to puzzling questions. One area of science is seeing an explosion of digital data that is readily available and highly impactful — it’s data about living organisms in our environment, species that contribute to our food supply and maybe most excitingly, life in our bodies—contributing to our individuality, and helping understand complex diseases and develop new treatments. This exciting field of Data Science is called Bioinformatics.

Biological data such as genomics, transcriptomics, or metabolomics is big and complex, often making bioinformatics intimidating for non-bioinformaticians. That’s what we want to change. We plan to make bioinformatics tools accessible, preparing curated projects that train students about the analysis logic and applications of their findings. By doing this, we want to enable biologists, that are trained to appreciate the biological complexity, to use advanced analytical algorithms to get meaningful and reliable information. For those learning to code, we are creating application exercises 

that direct coding skills to important aspects of biological problems, providing a detailed explanation of biology concepts.

Clinicians, computer scientists, mathematicians, statisticians, and biologists can work together to solve the types of challenges we face. The students can learn to participate in this work and demonstrate independence, problem solving, and creativity, building their portfolio. We plan to organize hackathons where industry partners pose a challenge typical to their industry and evaluate proposed solutions from students.

Together, we can make this dream a reality: if you are a professor, industry expert or administrator, you can help us make this program work. These could be your students, potential hires, or colleagues. We would like to build specialty tracks that represent latest trends in pharmaceutical R&D, personalized medicine, ecology, and other fields. Our team will prepare the projects for students in an engaging format with practical assignments. Once the projects are prepared, we want to pilot the program with our first group of students that we can evaluate before and after the courses, providing them with a competitive hackathon judged by a panel of judges that are experts in this field.

Join our team of international instructors

Our courses provide practical bioinformatics skills for students on all levels: for undergraduate, P.h.D, or industry professionals. These courses simplify skills development, and provide access to research tools to continue to analyze big biomedical datasets. The courses are based on projects developed as tutorials teaching the logic of analysis specific to data types and application. We are looking for qualified instructors to join our team – as collaborators or technical instructors. We are looking forward to integrating our projects into an existing curriculum or engaging new students online, through workshops and hackathons.
